Horses, Cows, a Barn and a Stream

Although Texas has many incredible farms, there is one very unique one just outside of Houston. It lies snuggled lazily between an old plantation and a school. On one side of the road, you see the normal barns, tractors, hay and a house. However, on the other side of the road the view is enchantment. Horses, cows, a barn and a stream. All there as though painted by fairies left to entice the World.

I don = t get to go through this place very often but on those rare occasions, I slow to a crawl. My eyes take in as much as they can. I want to hold onto the site before me as though I were visiting a well known place somewhere in the World, everyone wants to go to.

The horses are close enough to see their sleek muscles. They appear to prefer being close to the water. A few stand on the slight incline leading to the waters edge, balancing themselves as they graze, aware that if they loose their footing they will fall in.

Grazing nearby are a herd of cows. Black & white, a few reddish brown, some sitting on the cool grass under a tree, their tails swishing back and forth at flies. A rare Crane strolls nearby too. This is a mystery to me. I see them all the time close to the cows, walking with the cows. I presume this is because while grazing, bugs get stirred up.

Red as we were brought up to believe barns should be, is, the barn. It stands alone on this side of the road, appearing to be abandoned yet obviously a structure being used for something. And nearby, is the stream, flowing from a larger waterway, gently curving this way and that as far as the eye can see.

I imagine every man, woman and child would love to see horses, cows, a barn and a stream especially like this one. I hope most Houstonians know of this place. If you are lucky enough to see something like what I just described, just be sure you bring film and a picnic lunch.
